Sooke at a Glance
Lodged between untamed rainforest and the Pacific Ocean, Sooke, British
Columbia, is marked by its rugged scenery and mild climate. The dramatic scenery
of ocean beaches like China
Beach and Gordon's
Beach, and waterfront trails, such as the West
Coast Trail and the Juan
de Fuca Marine Trail, inspire hikers and sea kayakers from all over the globe
to visit. Fishing tours are also popular, as Sooke is known for some of the best
year-round salmon fishing on Vancouver
Island, and the occasional halibut comes in at a few hundred pounds. Boat
tours between April and October offer a glimpse of the area's abundant marine
wildlife, including killer whales, porpoises and sea lions. For a more land-bound
day's activities, there are a number of nearby golf courses. In town, Sooke extends
a welcoming hand to visitors with its grand selection of bed and breakfasts, art
studios and shops. This is perfect for those who want a quiet retreat, yet still
wish to be near Victoria, a scenic
40-minute drive away.
